1B - Don't panic about CHANGE - Keep it SIMPLE
As discussed in yesterday's lesson, if WARTS (Words (Lexis), Attitudes, Relationships, Tones, Structure) is too much to remember and apply, then simply remember that these THREE issues will likely present themselves in MOST older texts they can throw at you.
1. ATTITUDE - A change in ATTITUDE towards the topic at hand - usually displaying a far more judgemental or oppressive tone that we'd expect today.
You'll pick out examples of this archaic attitude, explain which words in particular would be problematic by today's standards, and then compare it to some more sensitive language in the modern text.
2. STRUCTURE - You'll likely see structure and sentence types which are difficult to follow, with the text probably not being paragraphed how you'd expect (different topics or instructions being discussed in the same PG), and LONG COMPLEX SENTENCES with multiple subordinate verb clauses, which would be considered confusing by today's standards.
You'd give examples of the CONFUSING structures, explain WHY these would be seen as confusing and unhelpful today, and then explain that, over time, writers and publishers have become far more used to making genres show value to reader experience, and then show how much BETTER structuring is today.
3. RELATIONSHIP - You'll probably see the older text displaying a stern, authoritative or imperative tone, stating things that are simply TRUE, or stating what people must/should do.
You'll show examples of this and explain why this would be seen as unappealing by today's standards, then compare to the more friendly, persuasive or humourous relationship established today.
By following this SIMPLE guide, it should take you through the older text without having to stress.
Obviously, if you have MORE time on Text C, then make MORE points.
There may be MULTIPLE archaic attitudes!
